The Sankofa Restoration Project, Inc. is an advocacy group for the accurate conveyance of the story of African people throughout the world. We are Griot [An African expression for a master story-tellers] And therefore we have form our research under our Department of Griotology.
We are dedicated to the proposition that African of all cultures, languages and spiritual persuasions are, in effect, the best suited to tell their own story. The United States Colored Troops Headstone initiative Project is one of the latest project set in motion for us to provide an ongoing vehicle designed to bring us closer to our expressed goal.

Prior to the Bureau of Colored Troops, which created by the United States War Department in January 1863, during the Civil War,
to handle personnel matters, rations, pay, and other things relating to African-American soldiers, Their were Division raised and fought in
South Carolina and Louisiana. A Total of 178,895 United States Colored Troops (USCT) soldiers fought in all aspects of the war, and the regiments served as occupation
troops in former Confederate states.
Approximately 175 regiments comprised of over 178,000 free blacks and freed slaves served during the last two years of the war,
and bolstered the Union war effort at a critical time. By war's end, the United States Colored Troops comprised approximately a tenth of all Union troops. There
were 1,715 USCT combat casualties during the war. Regiments, including infantry, cavalry, light & Heavy artillery
